Two Women (Poem)
Once there were two women
Who never knew each other
One you do not remember
The other you call mother.
Two vastly different lives bringing you another
You grew in ones belly
Unknown to both
You also grew in another's heart
One dreams of you and your life
The other prays that the first is doing well
One is all fondness
The other is all loving
One is like the moon's shadow
Not there but always watching
The other is your north star
Always lighting the way home
One gave you life
While the other taught you how to live it
She gave you your first hug
And I have watched you grow
The first gave you an ability to feel emotions
While another scares away nightmares with tight cuddles
One gifted you genetics and eternal love
While the other taught you values and manners
You are ones baby and always will be
Know though you are my child
She is grateful for the gift of life
And another is grateful for the gift of love
One women made a difficult sacrifice just you
Another woman opened her home
Someday maybe you will ask
What makes you who you are nature or nurture
I will answer you this
My dearest know that not one is better or stronger
We both love you as you are because you are a gift.
You are our gift.
A mother
I wrote this poem a year ago for mothers day. For the first time in who knows how long I wanted to acknowledge my biological mother. I decided to put pen to paper and voice some thoughts I have had for a while.
Reading it back today, I can tell I struggled to choose a narrator and articulate many emotions i had no words for. I choose not to ‘edit’ this poem to keep its authenticity and genuine raw emotions intact because they are part of my journey in processing, healing, growth and self discovery.
I am speaking from my own life experiences and opinions as a transracial adoptee. Please recognize everyone is entitled to their own views and may have different experiences.
